Israel’s cyber division of Lahav 433, a unit of the Israel Police, has successfully blocked cryptocurrency accounts associated with Hamas. The organization allegedly utilized these accounts to solicit funds through various social media platforms. The operation was a collaborative effort involving Lahav 433, the National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF) under the Ministry of Defense, Shin Bet, and other intelligence agencies. The cryptocurrency exchange Binance cooperated with Israel in locating and shutting down the accounts. Lahav 433 also worked with the UK police to freeze an account in Barclays bank. The authorities plan to transfer the confiscated funds to the state treasury.
This is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has escalated in recent months. Hamas had initiated a fundraising campaign on various social networks, urging the public to deposit cryptocurrencies into its accounts. The cyber unit and NBCTF promptly identified these accounts and froze them with the assistance of Binance. Israel claims that this is part of its effort to combat terrorism financing and seize the strategic financial assets of terrorist organizations.
