Israel’s cyber division of Lahav 433, a unit of the Israel Police, has successfully blocked cryptocurrency accounts associated with Hamas. The organization allegedly utilized these accounts to solicit funds through various social media platforms. The operation was a collaborative effort involving Lahav 433, the National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing (NBCTF) under the Ministry of Defense, Shin Bet, and other intelligence agencies. The cryptocurrency exchange Binance cooperated with Israel in locating and shutting down the accounts. Lahav 433 also worked with the UK police to freeze an account in Barclays bank. The authorities plan to transfer the confiscated funds to the state treasury.

This is a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has escalated in recent months. Hamas had initiated a fundraising campaign on various social networks, urging the public to deposit cryptocurrencies into its accounts. The cyber unit and NBCTF promptly identified these accounts and froze them with the assistance of Binance. Israel claims that this is part of its effort to combat terrorism financing and seize the strategic financial assets of terrorist organizations.

How does the Lahav 433 unit work?

Lahav 433, often referred to as the “Israeli FBI”, is an Israeli crime-fighting umbrella organization within the Israel Police. It was created on January 1, 2008, as a merger of five law enforcement offices into one. The unit is tasked with investigating national crimes and corruption, including crimes such as murder and sexual assault.

The structure of Lahav 433 includes several specialized units:

  • National Cyber Crime Unit: Handles the country’s most complex cybercrime cases.
  • Child Online Protection Bureau: Fights cybercrimes done against minors.
  • National Fraud Investigations Unit
  • Unit of International Crime Investigations
  • National Financial Investigations Unit
  • National Unit for Locating Stolen Vehicles
  • National Unit for Prisons Guards’ Investigations
  • The Gideonites: A Mista’arvim unit.
