What began as a routine task of returning gardening tools to the garage unfolded into a nerve-wracking search for her 14-month-old son, Stanley, who had mysteriously disappeared from her sight.
Drauch noticed that Stanley, who typically trailed behind her, was nowhere to be seen as she transitioned seamlessly between her everyday tasks. The panic set in, and the frantic search for the toddler commenced.
A Terrifying Discovery by the Family Pool
As Patricia scoured her home in desperation, the unthinkable became a reality when she discovered Stanley lying face-up in the family pool. A rush of fear swept over her, as she described the terrifying scene to News 8, “His lips were blue. He rolled his eyes back. It was the scariest feeling, and the image stays in your head for a long time.”
Bear, the Unlikely Hero Emerges
However, the story takes an unexpected turn. In the midst of this crisis, a four-legged hero named Bear, the family’s black Labrador, steps into the spotlight. Astonishingly, Bear was found in the pool, not moving or barking but balancing Stanley on his back, keeping the little boy’s head above water.
“[Bear] wouldn’t move in the pool,” Drauch recounts. “He didn’t bark. He didn’t move. It was like he was afraid to move at all until I got Stanley up out of the pool, and that’s when [Bear] came up out of the pool with me.”
The Unwavering Presence of Bear
Bear’s behavior is nothing short of remarkable. He remained steadfast in the water, exhibiting a reluctance to move until Stanley was safely out of harm’s way. Drauch’s awe at Bear’s protective instincts is evident as she marvels at the incredible sight of Bear holding Stanley above the water’s surface.
Drauch trained Bear from a young age to look out for her children. “I’ve always told Bear growing up, ever since he was a pup, to just watch over his babies,” she shared.
Race Against Time: A Mother’s Journey to Safety
In the aftermath of this heart-stopping incident, Drauch faced another challenge. With Stanley unresponsive, Drauch attempted to call 911, only to discover that she had no cellphone reception. Undeterred, she swiftly gathered Stanley and her other children, jumping into her car and racing to the fire department.
During the drive, Stanley regained consciousness, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil. Upon reaching the fire department, he was described as “alert and in good condition,” a testament to the swift actions taken by his mother.
A Lifesaver in Fur: Bear’s Lasting Impact
Although there were no eyewitnesses to Bear’s heroic rescue, the evidence spoke volumes. Cass County Undersheriff Rick Behnke affirmed the significance of Bear’s actions, stating, “The dog is a lifesaver. That’s all I can say.” The presence of vomit in Drauch’s car confirmed that Stanley had ingested water, reinforcing the belief that Bear’s intervention had prevented a tragedy.
