Robert Meade, the hospital’s CEO, spills the beans on how this idea took root. In 2020, Titus Herman, CEO of Southeastern Guide Dogs, pitched the concept of training guide dogs in COVID-19 scent detection. The plan, once hashed out, officially launched in April 2021. Buffy, with her keen sense of smell and calm demeanor, emerged as the chosen one. According to Meade, “To our knowledge, and according to published reports, Buffy is the only COVID-19 detection dog in use in a hospital in the United States.”
