In 2020, Titus Herman, CEO of Southeastern Guide Dogs, pitched the concept of training guide dogs in COVID-19 scent detection. The plan, once hashed out, officially launched in April 2021. According to Meade, “To our knowledge, and according to published reports, Buffy is the only COVID-19 detection dog in use in a hospital in the United States.”
