The Unexpected Internet Darling
Smudge’s journey to stardom began when her cat mom, Kaia Bint Savage, decided to share her daily exercise walks on TikTok through the account “smudgeandfriends.” Little did she know that Smudge’s leisurely pace would resonate with an audience far beyond their expectations.
With 8.4 million likes and over 88,000 followers, Smudge has become an internet sensation. Kaia expresses her surprise, saying, “Obviously, we fell in love with her already from adopting her, but it’s so lovely to see the support.”
Fresh Start at 18
Three years ago, Savage and her partner Matt O’Farrell welcomed Smudge into their lives. The decision to adopt the 18-year-old cat was motivated by a desire to provide a loving home for a senior feline whose family was moving abroad.
Upon adoption, Smudge tipped the scales at a hefty 23 pounds, double the ideal weight for female British shorthairs. Determined to ensure Smudge’s golden years were active and healthy, Savage and O’Farrell embarked on a transformative journey.
The Birth of the ‘Smudge Walk
The vet’s advice was clear: keep Smudge active to prevent joint stiffness and help her shed some pounds. However, getting an elderly, grumpy cat to exercise wasn’t a walk in the park.
Undeterred, Savage initiated the “Smudge walk” by starting at the front door. The initial attempts were met with resistance, but a pivotal moment occurred when Savage set Smudge down at the end of the garden, making her walk back.
A TikTok video capturing Smudge’s adorable waddle went viral, garnering 1.8 million views and marking the inception of the “Smudge walk.”
Cheering from the Sidelines
As Smudge’s daily strolls gained popularity, thousands of viewers tuned in to witness her slow and steady progress. Some made light-hearted jokes about her pace; however, the comment section became a haven of support.
Fans rallied behind Smudge the cat, leaving encouraging comments like, “She can do it! Love you, Smudge! Keep up the great work! Keep up the great work.”
From Cat to Companion: Smudge’s Unexpected Influence
Beyond the lighthearted comments, Smudge unknowingly became a fitness inspiration for many viewers. Messages poured in, expressing how Smudge motivated them to stay active and adopt healthier habits.
Savage shares, “The sweetest messages are from people saying that she’s encouraging them to keep moving and keep active. People say, ‘I went on my daily walk today’ or ‘I didn’t want to go for a swim today, but I thought if Smudge can do her daily exercise, I can.’
